Clinic:
Katy and Morgan took Leo and
Lunas over for a day of piaffe/passage fun at Wyvern
Farm in Martinez. Leo proved he still has “it” at age 17.5 by showing off his
classic piaffe and lovely piaffe/passage
transitions. And Lunas impressed everyone with his
ability in passage! See the videos below.

Dressage is very pleased to announce a collaboration
with CANTER California, The Communication Alliance
to Network Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses. CANTER is a 501c3 nonprofit
dedicated to rescuing and rehoming thoroughbred racehorses. These athletic horses are too often tossed aside
at the end of their racing careers, often at a young age, and CANTER’s goal is
to find new homes and careers for these horses as sporthorses.
Katy has long enjoyed working with thoroughbreds, many of which are good, uphill
movers with a desire to please and learn new skills who make excellent dressage
horses. Several of Katy’s students have been very successful in the show ring
on thoroughbreds (Kate Anderson and Scenic regularly scored in the 70’s at 1st
level, with “8”s on gaits, winning many classes over imported warmbloods; Brenda Baere recently
debuted at Prix. St. George level with her TB gelding,
scoring 63%). Katy is now donating dressage training for a CANTER-owned
horse. Check out Rydell’s page here for his adoption
information!

Summer Horse Trials and USPC Championships West:
Congratulations to Kenzie and Lolly, winners of the Jr Training Division! They started with a solid dressage
ride to score 35 (65%) then jumped double clean cross-country and stadium to
win the divison of 22 riders! This is Kenzie’s first big win with Lolly
and is just the beginning… their team finished 4th overall and 2nd
in HM. Good job MidCal!
CDS
Junior Championships:
Congratulations to Morgan
and Lunas, 2nd reserve champions at 2nd
level! Placing 3rd in this large and competitive class was a great
accomplishment for them. Morgan also competed in 3rd level classes
at this show, with 2 scores in the 60s and Morgan’s bronze medal!!

Yarra Yarra Dressage Show:
Katy and Rocky took home a
first and a second place with scores in the mid-sixties (lower than expected
for what Katy thought was his best test of the season, but that’s horse
shows!). Rocky has now proven himself a solid show horse. He’ll do some eventing this fall, then return to the dressage ring as a
5-year old for some 1st and 2nd level, and the FEI 5 year
old classes.

USPC National Ratings:
Huge congratulations to:
Megan Leonard, who
successfully passed the “A” Dressage to become the first Dressage A on the west
coast and one of only 4 in the country! Megan rode two of Katy’s horses, Leo
and Relic, and also a lovely borrowed Arab named Myth. She rode all of them
beautifully and even received an exceeds standards on
the “training” section of the test!
Kenzie Amack, who aboard her mare Lolly
passed both the C3-Dressage and the B-Traditional in a single weekend!
Jessi
Ellis, who aboard Robin passed the C3-Traditional, with an
exceeds standards on her dressage switch!

Annual Show:
Katy
and Rocky did two more solid training level rides for a pair of 67%s, winning
one and coming 2nd in the other.
Dressage
in the Almonds Show:
Katy
and Rocky had a solid 2nd outing, with a 65% on the first ride,
which was slightly distractable, and a 69% on a nice
second test. He handled the chaos of a 2-ring show and very busy warmup with aplomb!
Yarra Yarra Dressage Show:
Rocky
was high-point at his first recognized show, scoring 70.4 at training level
with the comment “lovely horse”. A good start to his career!
Megan
Leonard and Leo, at their first show together, won two open classes at 3-3 and
4-1, scoring 67% and 66.5% with two lovely clean rides. Congrats!
May 2010
Leap
of Faith Farm Schooling Show:
At
his 2nd show in one weekend, Rocky was even steadier, scoring 72%
and 76%! Relic did a solid 4th-level test 2 (with the correct count
in his 4-tempis!) for a 64%. It was the first time the brothers have met and
they were very cute together J A good weekend for all of Katy’s horses!
Heather
Farms Dressage Schooling Show:
RimRock
(Rocky) made his training level debut, scoring 68% and 71% with 8’s on gaits
and impulsion, and earning a 1st and a 2nd place. And he
got a “10” on behavior from Katy, handling everything in stride and standing at
the trailer like an old show horse! Leo also made his return to the Grand Prix
ring after many years away. Showing in the snaffle (and helmet—the new
fashion!), Leo and Katy earned a respectable 63% in spite of a few mistakes.
Good ponies!

Spring Horse Trials and Pony Club Eventing Rally:
Kenzie and
Robin had a super weekend at Prelim, winning the dressage (of 10 riders) with a
33 (67%), and jumping clean around cross-country and stadium. A few time faults
put them in 2nd overall (tied for 1st point-wise, but
ties are broken by XC time…). With Lolly, she
finished 3rd of 12 in dressage. Lolly
jumped very well but time faults in XC kept them out of the ribbons. Now onto
PC Championships this summer!

Yarra Yarra Show:
Morgan
and Lunas had a terrific show! They continue to march
up the levels, and here debuted at 3rd level (with 2 clean flying
changes!), earning a 3rd level score for their bronze medal with a
63.6% and the comment “Very nice pair”!. Morgan won
that class (of 5—not bad for her and Lunas’ first time
at this level!), and then went on to earn a 64.5% and win their 2nd-4
class (also of 5 riders—and an open class against trainers!). Congrats!
April 2010
East
Bay Chapter Show:
Morgan
and Lunas continued their winning ways, earning two

March 2010
Yarra Yarra Show:
Morgan
Wolfe and Lunas had a terrific day, putting in two
very flowing tests to earn a 65% at 1st level test 4 and a 64.4% at
2nd level test 3, and winning both classes (against open riders).
Congratulations!
Galway
Downs Horse Trials:
Kenzie and
Robin scored a 35 (65%) at Prelim, to come in 8th of 20 after
dressage. A few minor jumping errors put them in 13th at the end of
the weekend. Congrats on the completion of your first Prelim event! (We
dressage folks are very impressed by the solid 3’7” fences on a Prelim cross
country course! J)
Feb 2010
Twin
Rivers Horse Trials:
Kenzie had
a great dressage day. With Robin in her 1st preliminary event, she
finished 5th (only 0.4 points out of 3rd!) out of 26
riders with a score of 35 (65%). With Lolly, she
finished 4th in Open Novice on a 31 (69%) in spite of 2 off-courses
that kept her out of the 70% range. Great job! Unfortunately pouring rain kept
the rest of the event form going on as scheduled…
Denville-Kanani Show:
Kenzie
with Lolly and Morgan with Lunas
did their 1st recognized dressage show and their 2nd
level debuts. Both Kenzie and Morgan got scores in
the 60’s towards their bronze medals, and their first 2 qualifying scores for
Junior Championships at both 1st and 2nd level.
Congratulations!
Jan
2010:
Judges
Program:
Congratulations
to Katy who was just admitted to the “r” dressage judges program! Admission to
this program requires graduation of the “L” program with distinction, 5 scores
of 65% or above at 4th level or above, 15 letters of recommendation,
including 12 letters from current judges, and finally approval of the USEF
Licensed Officials Committee. The program takes about 18 months to complete,
and if Katy is successful she will become a USEF licensed dressage judge!
Twin
Rivers Combined Test:
Kenzie and
Robin tied for 3rd of 15 in the dressage phase at Preliminary level,
and Kenzie and Lolly
finished 3rd in dressage and 3rd overall (of 12) at
Training level. This was the 1st
time for both pairs at these levels and bodes well for Kenzie’s
season!
Horse
sales:
Congratulations
to Shannon McCarley on the purchase of Scenic! We
expect great things from the two of you and look forward to seeing you at shows
and Pony Club events!
