MHA Dressage Schooling Show:
Jen Colby and Annette Hodtwalker’s TB Cezanne (“Ty”) put in two solid training
level tests (including several 8’s on trot loops and circles) with scores in
the mid 60’s. Ivette Harte and her 3 year old Days Go
By (“Dovy”) dominated Intro, scoring 73%. Ivette also rode Dana Estes wonderful Hanoverian stallion
Worthy Opponent (“Archie”), winning at second level with a 69%. A good show for
all!

Congratulations to Morgan
and Lunas, Reserve Champions for the FEI Jr level! Finishing 2nd in the Team test
(64.5%), 1st in the individual (65.8%) and 2nd in the freestyle

Nila and
Nipper had a great show. In the warm-up classes, they finished 2nd
of 22 riders at Tr-1, 5th of 25 riders in Tr-2, and 2nd
in the dressage equitation class. They finished 10th in the
competitive Tr-level championships. Nipper was
awarded the Dustbuster trophy for being the oldest
horse competing (age 24!) and was the subject of much admiration throughout the
weekend!

North
American Junior Young Rider Championships
Congrats to Morgan Wolfe and
the Region 7 Junior team, who finished 7th in the very tough
competition! Lunas and Morgan put in two solid tests
under tremendous pressure. The girls, grooms, parents, trainers, and Chef were
an amazing group and everybody had a wonderful experience.

Instructor Certification
Program:
Katy filed her final report
on the Instructor Certification Program to the Dressage Foundation to receive
her grant. It should be up shortly on the Foundation’s website; there is also
a copy here. Now she
just has to wait for an opening in a testing!
Pony Club Festival and
NAJRYC, 2011:
Excitement is building for
Kentucky at the end of July. Katy is very pleased to be traveling to the Pony
Club Festival as a dressage clinician. Nila wrote
about Katy on her blog
(check it out to track the MidCal teams as they
prepare for the USPC Championships).
Other News:
The USDF On
the Levels DVD
was just released after considerable
production delay. This DVD was filmed last October, Katy and Rimrock are featured at Training Level. Rocky was only a
few months under saddle at the time, and impressed everyone with his willing
and calm behavior.
Rimrock, June 2007-April 20, 2011:
Katy is very
sad to announce the passing of her up-and-coming young horse, RimRock, who died in a freak and tragic accident overnight
in his turnout. Rocky was a lovely young horse, with wonderful rideability and a terrific canter. He was showing a lot of
promise in both jumping and dressage, and he will be missed.

Dressage Derby, Vacaville:
MORGAN AND LUNAS ARE GOING TO
KENTUCKY! At the final FEI Jr rider qualifier, Morgan
and Lunas scored 64.8% on the team test, 65.0% on the
individual, and 67.5% on their freestyle, giving them an overall test average
of 65.2 and putting them on the Region 7 NAJRYC team. Katy is hugely proud of
Morgan: she has done an amazing job bringing her horse along, and she rode this
season with a maturity and professionalism well beyond her 16 years J. The Region
7 team is very strong and we look forward to bringing a medal home from
Kentucky!!
Shelly Siegel Show:
Morgan and Lunas
had another great Jr qualifying (in spite of the
lovely pouring rain which put about a foot of mud in the stable area!), scoring
65.9% in the team test (1st place!) and 63.4 (2nd place)
in the individual. She also debuted her new Harry Potter freestyle (Thanks
Cynthia Collins of LunaTunes Freestyles!), scoring
69.75 (with a 70.7 and an “8” on music from one judge). Link here (be sure to
turn the sound on!)

Dressage Derby, Vacaville:
In a very competitive FEI Jr qualifier, Morgan and Lunas
finished 3rd in the team test with a 63.9% (in spite of an
unauthorized line of 2-tempis!), then came back to the next day to ride a
beautiful, expressive Individual test for 2nd place and a 67.5%.
Congrats! Video here. Morgan was
particularly pleased to receive a score of “8” on her walk pirouettes, “8” on
rider and a “9” for her final halt!

Woodside Spring Horse Trials:
Kenzie and Lolly competed in the $15,000 Preliminary Challenge,
finishing 6th of 18 after dressage. A few minor mistakes in the
jumping kept them out of the money… this time!
Woodside CDI:
Morgan and Lunas
did their first CDI and first FEI Jr Qualifier,
putting in a solid test and ending up Reserve Champions for the Team Test with
a 63.2%. She also finished 4th in the individual test (only 0.5% out
of 2nd). And they managed to look beautiful for the 7 am CDI jog!

Megan and Leo
did their 2nd Intermediare II test for a
score of 63.4%, with a lovely piaffe/passage
tour and good tempi changes. Megan now has both Intermedaire
scores for her Gold Medal and is oh-so-close to Grand Prix! Video
here.

Morgan and Lunas
debuted at the FEI Junior tests, scoring 64.7% on the Individual test and 62.5%
on the team test, putting them well on their way to making the Region 7 FEI Jr team this year. Congratulations!

best.

USDF
Instructor Certification Workshop:
Katy
successfully completed the first day of the USDF Lunging Workshop, in spite of
the “interesting” weather. The final day (lunging the
rider) has been rescheduled for April, when things should be drier!
Yarra Yarra Dressage Show:
Brenda and
Leo put in a fluid, clean Intermediate I for a 62% and
the first score for Brenda’s USDF Gold Medal!

Twin Rivers
Horse Trials:
Kenzie and Lolly placed 3rd
in Dressage in the Preliminary Rider Division with their best-ever dressage
test and a score of 27.7 (72.3%). A cross country round with
no jump faults means that they qualify to run a CCI* (a full three-day event!).
Instructor
Certification:
Katy was
thrilled to receive a grant from the Dressage Foundation
for her expenses in attending the USDF Instructor Certification Series. See the
press release here. Katy’s
report on the workshops will be published on the Dressage Foundation website.
Feb 2011
Denville Kanani Show:
Brenda Baere rode Leo in their first show together at Intermediate
I, winning the class. Highlights were the first extended trot (which scored a
7--not bad for the 18 year old man!) and the lovely canter zigzag. A few
first-time bobbles in the tempis kept them (just
barely!) from getting the score for Brenda’s USDF Gold medal, but we are
confident she will get it next time!
Morgan and Lunas won both 3-3 and 4-1 with a pair of 61%s (including
8’s on both canter-halts in her 4th level test!) Morgan now has both
4th level scores for her USDF Silver medal!
Yarra Yarra Show:
Megan and
Leo, returning to the show ring together after their successful PSG shows last
fall, made the big jump up to intermediate II, scoring 61.6%. The one tempis and passage were a particular highlight. Megan
received a 7 on rider with the big compliment “shows good basics”. Megan and
Leo will be aiming for the Brentina cup this year, as
well as working towards Megan’s USDF Gold medal. One score down, 3 to go! Video here.

Morgan and Lunas
won their 3rd level test 3 class with a
62.8%, then made their debut at 4th level scoring 61.4%, earning the
first score for Morgan’s silver medal. The comment was “harmonious pair.”
Morgan has done all of Lunas’s training herself and
is rightly very proud of the horse she has created.

USDF Instructor Certification
Workshop:
Katy participated in the Teaching
workshop of the USDF Instructor Certification program and was called a “strong
candidate for certification”. She received multiple marks of “excellent” on her
evaluation—rather like getting 10’s on a dressage test!
