Katy
works with all levels of horses and riders, from training level to FEI, and
she believes that correct dressage work can benefit horses and riders of
all types. Katy believes that both
horses and riders should find joy in correct work, coming to a
higher state of harmony and athleticism, and that horses should become
lighter and easier to ride as they move up the levels of dressage.
Katy
specializes in working with two groups of riders, juniors and hard-working
adult amateurs. She loves to work with junior riders and show them the fun
and beauty of dressage. As a long-time pony club instructor, Katy focuses
on C1-A level riders and especially on those interested in pursuing the
C3-A ratings in the dressage specialty, for which Katy is an examiner and
prep clinician. Katy is also uniquely sympathetic to the dressage needs of
amateurs with demanding “real-world” jobs. She schedules lessons for
evenings and weekends to work around your schedule. Barglow Dressage
students are encouraged, but by no means required, to join our group at
dressage shows around California
and to audit or ride in clinics when available.

Katy
offers lessons and training at beautiful, horse friendly Max Ranch in
Danville, CA, in the heart of the Camino Tassajara horse country. Max Ranch
has a very nice covered arena with wonderful lights for year-round riding,
and allows trailer-ins on a limited basis. Katy is also available for
lessons at your facility in the Walnut Creek/Danville area. Additionally,
Katy offers weekend clinics and Pony Club preps (for the Dressage Ratings,
the flat phase of the Traditional Ratings, and the HB/HA knowledge Ratings)
as well as lunging and teaching clinics, anywhere in the country, and is
happy to judge schooling shows and competition clinics around northern
California.
Katy is
very pleased to be able to offer both lunge lessons (focusing on seat and
position) and dressage lessons on Leo, her Grand Prix Schoolmaster. Leo’s
bombproof and quiet temperament, kind and forgiving nature, and sensitivity
to the aids make him a wonderful teacher. The absolute best way to learn
dressage is to start from a solid base of an independent seat and then learn
the correct aids from a horse who knows it all, and who can give the
wonderful feeling of lightness and collection needed to be successful at
the upper levels. Not to mention how much fun he is to ride!
Katy
brings a unique combination of skills to her teaching. Along with her
dressage skills, acquired over the past 15 years of training horses from
unbroken to Grand Prix, Katy also brings a judge’s eye to her teaching, as
well as the pony club focus on the importance of correct position and
self-analysis. Additionally, she brings the teaching and communication
insight from her life in science. At Stanford Katy was nominated to be the
director of the tutoring program for undergraduates, where she oversaw
tutor hiring and training across all disciplines, and in grad school and
beyond Katy has mentored and taught high school students, undergraduates,
and graduate students both in and out of class. These experiences have
taught her the importance of communication, of adapting to different styles
of learning, and of breaking complex techniques and ideas down to their
essence. These are all skills she uses in her riding and horse care
instruction as well.
